Romance in Estonia

For the travel curious, there are plenty of lists detailing the quirky and fun ways various countries and cultures celebrate Valentine’s Day. But one that caught our attention is the Estonian tradition of name-swapping Valentine’s Day for “Sõbrapäev” or “Friends Day.” That simple change suddenly makes the holiday inclusive to all residents regardless of their relationship status.

Not only is the emphasis of expressing love to ANYONE you care about—from neighbors, friends, relatives and, of course, oneself—what is really celebrated, many Estonian cities pay love forward by running a special for-singles “love bus,” to give those who seek companionship a chance to meet someone special while commuting around town.
